Highway projects put on fast track

NEW DELHI, OCT 11: After not awarding even a single highway contract during the first half of the fiscal, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) seems to have woken up. It has decided to put road sector projects on the fast track, with as many as 29 highway construction projects scheduled to be cleared by the month end. This apart, the ministry of road transport and highways has also circulated a note for the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) for exemption of 12 highway projects from the PPP-AC approval committee. They include seven projects from NHDP phase II and five from NHDP III (A), totaling a length of 841 kilometre.

All these projects are to be carried out on the build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis. Of these about 10 have been sent to the public private partnership appraisal committee (PPP-AC), and are mainly from NHDP phase III (A).

The ministry is hopeful that it would be able to award another 60 projects for highway construction by end of the fiscal. These would include 1,000 km under NHDP V as well as about 750 km under NHDP II.
