New airport policy to be launched
November 2, 2007: The Committee on Infrastructure (CoI), headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is seeking views of the finance and company affairs ministries and also the Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission in finalising the policy of the new greenfield airport.
The policy when approved will pave the way for private participation in airport development and dispense with the Centre’s mandatory approval for setting up greenfield airports. The policy is to be presented in the cabinet.
With the approval, government-owned Airports Authority of India will have to form a joint venture for several of its existing airports with private developers and also face competition. It will also lead to a new view of developers setting up greenfield airports and seeking to develop a full-fledged township in the periphery.
