Assam is the
largest populated state in north-eastern India. Due to the regional
and cultural differences the state has been
divided several times over the past three-four decades to separate
out Nagaland, Meghalaya and Mizoram, with Arunachal Pradesh being
the last to be separated the part that remained is what we
call Assam. The State can be
divided into two important physical regions – the Barak valley and
the Brahmaputra valley. Tea cultivation and processing is a major industry in the
state.

According to the 24th Quarterly Survey of Projects Investment, conducted by
ProjectsToday, as of 30 September 2006, the state had 397 projects worth
Rs.23,634
crore in various stages of planning and
implementation.
The
projects implementation ratio for the state was a healthy 46.3 per
cent, as compared to the national average of 44.0 per cent.
