Jharkhand was formed on 1 November 2000, by bifurcation of Bihar. It accounts
for about 45 per cent of the geographical area of undivided Bihar and tribals
constitute nearly one-third of the state population.
The division has had a favourable impact on Jharkhand. Most of the mineral
resources such as iron ore and coal were bestowed to Jharkhand while most of the
population remained with residual Bihar. Jharkhand also had the royalty income
from mining activities and heavy industries such as Telco and Tisco.
Projects Investment
According to the 24th
Quarterly Survey of Projects Investment conducted by Projects Today, as of 30
September 2006, the state had 454 projects worth Rs.87,999 crore in various stages of
planning and implementation.
Although the
state ranks 10th overall, with a YoY increase of 44.6 per cent, it suffered from a low project implementation ratio
of 30.6 per cent, which was much below the national average of 44.0 per cent.
The government agencies are investing in coal based power, power
transmission, iron and steel, coal mining, railways, and irrigation.
