Kerala also know as God's own Country was elevated to statehood by the States Reorganisation Act of November 1, 1956. Blessed with the abundance of nature, the state attracts a lot of tourists. Kerala's economy largely operates under the welfare-based democratic socialist principles and though one of the smaller states in India in terms of area, it is among the states with a very high population density and  enjoys the distinction of having the highest literacy rate in the country.

According to the 24th Quarterly Survey of Projects Investment conducted by ProjectsToday, as of 30 September 2006, the state had 485 projects worth Rs.72,882 crore in various stages of planning and implementation. 

With a mere increase of 7.8 per cent on a YoY basis, the state ranked 13 overall. The latest project implementation ratio observed for the state was an insignificant 22.4 per cent, compared to the national average of 44.0 per cent.
