Madhya Pradesh, the second largest state in the country in terms of area, is
also the seventh most populous state. The bifurcation of Chhattisgarh from
undivided Madhya Pradesh, on 1 November 2000, has had a bearing on the residual
Madhya Pradesh.
Madhya Pradesh lost to Chhattisgarh on several counts. For example:
Chhattisgarh, though one-third of residual MP, boasts of 44 per cent of the
forest land of the undivided state. The residual state also suffered through
loss of mineral resources to the new state. Similarly, Chhattisgarh is surplus
in power generation while the residual MP became power deficient.
It may also be noted that area-wise, the undivided MP was largest state in
India, area-wise.
Projects Investment
According to the 24th Quarterly Survey of Projects Investment conducted by
ProjectsToday, as of 30 September 2003, Madhya Pradesh had 1,067 projects worth
Rs.84,850 crore in various stages of planning and implementation.
Though Madhya Pradesh does not figure among the top investment destinations
in the country, the state enjoys a favourable project implementation
ratio of 62.0 per cent, as compared to the national average of 44.0 per cent.
Major industries attracting investment are thermal and hydel based power,
irrigation, petroleum products (refineries) and hydrocarbons/ petrochemicals.
