Maharashtra, the second most populous state in
India and the third
largest state in terms of area. The state capital, Mumbai is the financial capital
of the country.
Projects Investment
Maharashtra, one of the most industrialised and better-developed states in
India, is the most favoured investment destination. According to the 24th
Quarterly Survey of Projects Investment conducted by ProjectsToday, as of 30
September 2006, the state had 2,745 projects worth a whopping
Rs.2,52,712 crore in
various stages of planning and implementation, thus ranking it first in terms of
projects investment.
With over 10 per cent of the overall projects investment in India,
the state had an implementation ratio of 48.4 per cent, marginally
more than the national average of 44.0.
The cumulative share of the central and state government agencies in the
projects investment was more than that of the private sector.
The major industries attracting private investment in projects are thermal,
nuclear and hydel based power and roadways. The other major industries
attracting significant investment are basic infrastructure projects such as
railways, real estate, aviation infrastructure (airports), shipping infrastructure (ports
etc.), iron and steel, machinery and electronics, non-conventional energy,
petroleum products (refineries) and petrochemicals, tourism and hospitality.
