Facelift for Wankhede stadium

PROJECTSTODAY: THE Mumbai Cricket Association is planning to upgrade and expand Wankhede stadium, which is the main ground for hosting national and international level cricket tournaments in Mumbai. The upgradation procedure will begin with demolition of the stadium's north and south stands, and the height of these two stands will be increased from 17 metres to 29 metres and floor levels scaled up from two to four floors. Investment is estimated to be around Rs 100 crore.

The expansion involves increasing seating capacity from 32,000 to 42,000 seats. The stadium will include modern amenities like umpire room, dressing room and public address system. Shashi Prabhu & Associates is the project architect. The upgradation work is likely to begin next month and is scheduled for completion by December 2010.
