Bharat Sanchar Nigam has targeted to
add 10 million new connections during 2006-07, out of which 9 million would be
on wireless technology. Around 1 million new connections (both wireless and
wired) would be installed in rural areas.
The expansion is part of BSNL's plan
to provide 60 million new connections across the country within the next four
years.
The overall plan will necessitate the
construction of 40,000 new towers. BSNL will infuse Rs.1,000 crore in its
existing factories at Kolkata, Mumbai and Jabalpur for production of new
equipment.
Meanwhile, it is unlikely that BSNL
would float its initial public offering during the current fiscal year. It would
need at least 12-18 months, before IPO plans are actively pursued.
