Due to ongoing delays in repairing pipelines that disrupt water supply to residents, the Erode Corporation has decided to take over the maintenance of sumps and pipelines from the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board.
The Rs 484.45-crore Dedicated Water Supply Scheme (DWSS) project, launched in 2017, currently supplies 135 liters of water per capita daily to the city. Though 90 percent of the project is complete, the Corporation has been facing frequent pipeline breakages and malfunctioning motors. A senior engineer from the Corporation highlighted that delays in repairs damage the civic body’s reputation.
In response, the Corporation plans to maintain only sumps and tanks for now, with future decisions pending the completion of other works. For this, Rs 8.35 crore will be requested for operations and wages. Approval from the Director of Municipal Administration will be sought before a tender is issued.
