Foxconn is planning to make an investment of up to USD one billion to expand the factory in southern India where the Taiwanese contract manufacturer assembles Apple iPhones.
The move is a part of a gradual production shift by Apple away from China as it navigates disruptions from a trade war between Beijing and Washington and the Coronavirus pandemic.
Foxconn's planned investment in Sriperumbudur plant in Tamil Nadu, where Apple's iPhone XR is made will take place over the course of three years. Some of Apple's other iPhones models, made by Foxconn in China, would be made at this plant. Under the plan, the company will add around 6,000 jobs at its Sriperumbudur plant.
The company also operates a separate plant in Andhra Pradesh, where it makes smartphones for China's Xiaomi Corporation.
