IMR Metallurgical Resources will be setting up a steel plant in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh entailing an investment of over Rs 12,000 crore. The steel plant will have an annual production capacity of 10 million tonne.
This will be the second steel plant that has been proposed in the district.
Apart from this, as the Centre did not come forward to set up the steel plant in Kadapa as per the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014, the state government decided to establish one on its own -- AP High Grade Steels and the foundation stone for same was laid on 23 December 2019 by Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Y S Jaganmohan Reddy.
The state government also entered into an agreement with the National Mineral Development Corporation for supply of iron ore for the proposed steel plant, with a capacity of three million tonne.
The government was ready to provide all the basic infrastructure for the plant. The connectivity to Krishnapatnam port, railway and highways is readily available.
