JSW Jharkhand Steel has urged environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF), for its proposed integrated steel plant and captive power plant in Jharkhand.
The 10 million tpa integrated steel unit and 800 MW captive power plant is spread over 4,800 acre near Hesalong in Saraikela Kharsawan district. The proposed captive power plant has been envisaged in order to meet the power requirement for the proposed plant, which will be run by utilising the thermal coal and middlings available in the state, and surplus gas from the steel plant. The project will require 80 million gallons of water per day which will be drawn from Chandil Dam.
To obtain MoEF clearance, JSW Jharkhand Steel will undertake Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), for the project to identify and summarize all anticipated significant adverse environmental impacts and mitigation measures; and recommend monitoring measures, capacity development and training requirements for implementation of environmental management plan.
To build its case, the project proponent stated that no forest or ecologically sensitive zone is located in the project area.
