The government of Karnataka has joined the race along with the Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu governments to set up the biosynthetic technology centre of the central government.
The project is a virtual lab-cum-training centre to conduct research, support life sciences, and biotech and pharma companies. The quantum of funding will be decided by the centre after receiving proposals from all the interested states.
Meanwhile, the centre is likely to commission the bioscience and medical technology incubation centre in Bangalore, Karnataka, by June 2014. The project is estimated to cost Rs 40 crore. Of the total project cost, the union government will share Rs 20 crore and the balance amount will be chipped in by the government of Karnataka with land contribution. The centre is spread over 20,000 sq ft at the Alexandria Helix Biotech Park, Electronics City. The civil works for the project have been completed and the interiors are underway.
