The Purple Line Metro corridor is set to extend to IIM-Calcutta, with construction by Rail Vikas Nigam (RVNL) commencing soon. This 1.7 km extension from Joka to IIM-Calcutta was proposed a year ago, and the bidding process has now begun.
Once completed, the corridor will stretch 18 km from IIM-Joka to Eden Gardens. RVNL plans to build a viaduct and an elevated station about 100 mtrs. past the IIM-Calcutta campus along DH Road. The institute is located approx. 20 km from Howrah station, 18 km from Sealdah, and 35 km from the airport.
Originally planned as a 14.1 km corridor linking Joka with Esplanade, the Purple Line will now integrate into the upcoming Esplanade Metro hub. Officials confirmed that IIM-Joka station will be designed for future extensions, subject to feasibility and funding.
The Railway Ministry has approved the project and instructed RVNL to invite tenders for construction. The northern extension of the line will reach 1.6 km beyond Esplanade to Eden Gardens, creating an 18 km corridor with 14 stations. The Metro will improve accessibility for IIM-Calcutta and the surrounding community, and airport travellers will be able to reach the campus via the Airport-Noapara line, transferring at Esplanade to the Purple Line.
