The Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation (VIDC) has planned to develop the Lower Penganga Project across River Penganga in the Godavari Basin.

The project will create an irrigation potential of 2,18,129 ha, irrigable command area of 85,504 ha, live storage capacity of 19.95 TMC and water utilisation capacity of 41.12 TMC. The project will share 1.5 tmcft water from Penganga river, in the ratio of 80:20 i.e. 1.2 tmcft and 0.3 tmcft respectively by Telangana and Maharashtra.

The project worth Rs 10,429.39 crore will supposedly irrigate 5,463 ha in Telangana and 1,214 ha in Maharashtra. The barrage will spread over 228.08 ha of land. The costs and benefits of the project will be shared between Telangana and Maharashtra.

The capital outlay for Maharashtra will be Rs 1,697 crore. VIDC will fund the project from the proceeds of secured non-convertible redeemable bonds. After much delay the project was granted environment clearance (EC) to Maharashtra and Adilabad district of Telangana in May 2015.

In the same year in November 2015, the company received deck clearances for construction of a barrage across Penganga river at Jankha-Korata border villages of Telangana and Maharashtra. As per the latest information available with Projects Today, the project was kept on hold due to non-receipt of funds from government and local protest.
