The work on Mumbai Urban Transport Project-3 (MUTP-3), which involves upgrading suburban railways in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is set to commence post monsoon. The deadline for completion of the project is 2022.

The first project to be taken up under the MUTP-3 will be doubling of railway line for the new suburban corridor between Panvel and Karjat.

As part of MUTP-3 worth Rs 10,947 crore, the Railways will construct a road under bridge at Pune Expressway, road overbridge (ROB) and rail flyover between Panvel and Karjat for the new suburban railway corridor.

The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has floated tender for construction of bridges and flyover. The deadline set for construction of bridges and flyovers is 36 months.

The project had received the nod from the Centre in 2016, however, the work could not commence due to land acquisition of 156 ha required for the project. The railways, along with MRVC, began acquisition by the end of February 2019, but it was stuck due to resistance from landholders.

The project has received a vital project tag in July 2019. The land acquisition for the projects is in the advanced stage.  Machine procurement and ground work will begin in areas between Panvel and Karjat post monsoon, while work on mid-section trespass is underway.

Under the project, a 56 km railway line will be constructed between Panvel and Karjat railway stations entailing an investment to the tune of Rs 2,783 crore. Apart from this, other projects include quadrupling of Virar-Dahanu Road railway line, an elevated railway corridor between Airoli and Kalwa, trespass control on mid-railway section between Central and Western Railway and procurement of local trains for suburban railway network.
