The double line project for the new suburban rail corridor in Mumbai region between Panvel and Karjat is estimated for completion by December 2025. The ongoing work on this section, undertaken by Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has reached 46 percent work completion status.

The project, sanctioned at Rs 812 crore, involves three tunnels and two rail flyovers, as well as major and minor bridges, road under bridges and road over bridges are included in the proposed alignment. The Nadhal tunnel (219 mtrs.), Wavrely tunnel (2.6 km) and Kirawali tunnel (300 mtrs.) are all under construction.

More than 57 ha private land has been acquired, besides 4.4 ha government land for it. The project also covers forest land for which permission was obtained in August 2022, and the work has already commenced.

Meanwhile, MRVC has also begun the work of station building at Panvel, Chikhale, Mohape, Chowk and Karjat stations, apart from the railway flyovers (Panvel, Karjat) and three tunnels.

The new corridor will connect Navi Mumbai with Raigad district of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), and would aid the development of Panvel, Karjat and the proposed Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA). Moreover, it will allow local trains to run between Mumbai and Karjat via Panvel.
