The New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) celebrated its 50th anniversary in Mangaluru, with Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurating 16 major infrastructure projects and 113 CSR initiatives valued at Rs 1,500 crore.
The highlights included the launch of a 150-bed multi-specialty hospital built under a PPP model, designed to benefit port workers and the local community through Ayushman Bharat. NMPA also inaugurated a new office building for the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) to streamline seafarer certification.
From its humble beginnings in 1975 with four berths, the port now handles 46 million tonne of cargo annually, with plans to expand to 100 million tonne by 2047. NMPA, India's largest coffee exporter and second-largest LPG importer, is fully solar-powered and prioritises sustainability. The 2047 Master Plan includes expansion into LNG infrastructure, cruise terminals, and green logistics initiatives, enhancing its role as a leading maritime hub.
