On 1 February 2014, Prithviraj Chavan, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, inaugurated the Wadala-Chembur monorail corridor (Phase-I) of the Jacob Circle-Wadala-Chembur Monorail project, in Mumbai.
The 8.8 km Wadala-Chembur stretch (Phase-I) comprises seven stations which include Wadala Depot Station, Bhakti Park, Mysore Colony, Bharat Petroleum, Fertilizer Township, VNP and RC Marg, and Chembur.
The monorail service was opened for public use on 2 February, 2014. For a month, the service will be operational for eight hours a day and later on the monorail will function for 19 hours a day.
The project has been undertaken by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and will be implemented in various phases.
Phase-II of the project, which stretches from Jacob Circle-Wadala (11.20 km) is likely to be operational in the year 2015.
The entire stretch of the Jacob Circle-Wadala-Chembur Monorail project has been estimated at Rs 3,000 crore.
