Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee on 24 September 2020 launched twin projects in solar power and leather with a total investment of Rs 1,250 crore.

Both the projects involve foreign funding by way of debt and equity and will create employment opportunities.

The West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company (WBSEDCL) has undertaken setting up of 200 MW solar park at Dadanpatrabar in East Midnapore with financial assistance of KfW Germany and the state government.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) in this regard was signed between WBSEDCL and KfW during Bengal Global Business Conclave in Digha in November 2019. The total project outlay is Rs 1,200 crore. This involves Rs 960 crore financial assistance from KFW and the state’s contribution will be Rs 240 crore.

The project’s land requirement will be 1,032 acre in two phases of 532 acre and 500 acre. The project will produce 350 million units of power a year. The completion target for the project, expected to employ several thousand, will be June 2022.

The leather project will be undertaken at Calcutta Leather Complex (CLC) in Bantala, it will be funded by European Union (EU) and implemented by Dutch company Solidaridad. The project is for waste management and capacity building to boost exports to EU.

The investment in the project will be a little over Rs 35 crore. It will mainly convert waste into product, and eventually CLC will have zero waste. The new project will add more units to the existing 375 in the complex.

CLC accounts for a majority of the Rs 6,000 crore leather goods exports from the eastern region.
