Southern Railway has announced that construction of the Rs 274-crore Chennai Beach-Egmore fourth line project is progressing at a rapid pace. The ongoing work includes a temporary suspension of MRTS services between Chennai Beach and Chintadripet to accommodate this critical infrastructure upgrade.
While most of the construction is nearing completion, a 110-mtrs. stretch remains due to land exchange with the Navy. However, work on this section is yet to commence, pending final permissions from the Navy.
Southern Railway has assured that MRTS services between Chintadripet and Chennai Beach will resume within a month of receiving the go-ahead from the Navy. The project is expected to increase the frequency of long-distance and freight trains, expand services from Chennai Egmore and Tambaram terminals, and improve connectivity in the region.
Upon completion, the fourth line will enhance the railway infrastructure, decongest existing lines, and bolster the operational efficiency of Chennai suburban rail network.
