JUMEME begins construction of Lake Victoria hybrid solar mini-grid project Phase-I

RP Global, an independent renewable energy developer and majority shareholder of JUMEME Rural Power Supply has announced the construction of Phase-I of the solar-hybrid mini-grid project in Tanzania was in progress.

Phase-I, 11 new mini-grids are being constructed to bring 24/7 electricity supply to a population of more than 80,000 people.

The project is being built on a cluster of islands in Lake Victoria. The independent solar-hybrid mini-grids, equipped with battery storage technology, will electrify 20 villages.

The project was enabled by the European Union, who provided co-financing through the ACP- EU Energy Facility.

The commissioning of the project is scheduled to take place in June 2019.

In Phase-II, the company intends to build up to 11 more mini-grids to electrify 23 additional villages, bringing energy services to over 160,000 people. The approvals have already been secured while preparations for the implementation is underway.
