The Public Works Department (PWD) has announced plans to transform a 20 km stretch along the Munak Canal, formally known as the Western Yamuna Canal, into a vibrant landscaped riverfront corridor.
The project, stretching from Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) to Inderlok, is estimated to cost Rs 5.6 crore. The plan includes walking and cycling tracks, cultural spaces, and sustainability-focused design elements inspired by local art and culture. Regular cultural events are also planned.
The initiative is part of a broader push to promote non-motorised transport (NMT), improve urban livability, and develop green public spaces in Delhi. Features will include landscaped pedestrian and cycling paths, recreational zones, and infrastructure to improve flood management and disaster resilience.
The detailed project report (DPR) is currently in preparation. It will include value engineering, road safety audits, and quality checks and requires approvals from UTTIPEC and the Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC), officials confirmed.
