On 12 December 2013, the Cabinet approved a supplementary grant for Railways (2013-14) and has also given its assent to the government's proposal to spend Rs 70,759 crore.
The supplementary assistance of Rs 70,759 crore has been granted to Railways to carry out works like railway electrification, establishment of workshop to manufacture bogies, and construct several over-bridges.
The demand for supplementary grant for Rs 70,759.41, put forward by the Railway Ministry, consisted of a proposal of Rs 22,926 crore for electrification of Katwa-Azimganj, Nalhati-Azimganj, and Tildanga-New Farakka bypass lines, among others in West Bengal.
It also included a Rs 7,500 crore proposal for construction of a workshop to manufacture fiat bogies for LHB design coaches at Yadgir in south central railways.
The supplementary budget also proposed an equity of Rs 100 crore in the Kolkata Metro Rail, a joint venture of the railway and urban development ministries.
