On 6 March 2014, Daimler, the German automobile maker, laid the foundation stone for its bus manufacturing facility at Oragadam, near Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
The company will invest Rs 425 crore in the project. The manufacturing facility, spread over 27.91 acre in the existing Daimler facility, is expected to be commissioned by the second quarter of 2015. Initially, the capacity of the plant will be 1,500 units and can be expanded to 4,000 units later.
The company will make and assemble buses under the Mercedes-Benz and BharatBenz brands in the facility.
Further, Daimler India has tied up with Wrightbus, for manufacturing front-engine buses. The new bus body facility will be part of the proposed bus plant.
