The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has granted environmental and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance for deepwater container transhipment port to be established at Vizhinjam in Kerala.
The project, worth Rs 5,000 crore, has been granted clearance on the basis of provisions laid as per the Environment Impact Assessment Notification 2006 and CRZ Notification 2011 and its consequent amendments, subject to strict compliance with the terms and conditions.
The Ministry has given conditional nod to the project proponent, Vizhinjam International Seaport (VISL). Around 29 specific and 14 general conditions have been laid for the project by MoEF.
The Expert appraisal committee for infrastructure development and Coastal Regulation Zone had recommended the environmental clearance for the project in December 2013.
