The government of Uttar Pradesh has shelved the coal-based power project at Dopaha in Sonebhadra district of the state due to delay in obtaining approval.
The project has been shelved after it failed to get the green nod and land for the plant. The 3 x 660 MW power plant required 1,475 acre land, approximately 9.7 million tpa coal, and 60 cusecs of water. The power plant, being developed by Sonebhadra Power Generation Company, with an investment of Rs 7,900 crore, is an SPV of UP Power Transmission Corporation, .
The state government struggled to get the environmental clearance since 2010.
The Centre had refused to accord clearance on the ground that the nearby Singrauli area was under observation because of pollution from production of 10,000 MW of power in the area.
As per the study carried out by the Centre at Singrauli, the power plant can cause irreparable damage to the surrounding environment. Accepting the preliminary findings of the study, the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) directed that no power plant should come up in the notified (Singrauli) area till a Central team completes its study on the environmental hazards of these power plants.
