Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on 20 July, 2025 performed the ‘Bhoomi Pujan’ for a Rs 104 crore expansion of the Panjabari plant operated by West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union (WAMUL), under the Purabi Dairy brand.
The plant’s processing capacity will double from 1.5 lakh litres per day (LLPD) to three LLPD. The project, part of an MoU between WAMUL and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), will also add new product lines, including pasteurised milk, ice cream, and other dairy products, strengthening Assam's formal dairy sector.
The Panjabari facility, the largest in the North East, is key to the Assam Dairy Development Plan (ADDP), which targets 10 LLPD processing capacity across the state. The expansion will raise pasteurised milk output from 1.15 LLPD to 2.0 LLPD and add an ice cream line of 20 TLPD, scalable to 30 TLPD, alongside 70 TLPD of other dairy products.
In a bid to boost Assam's dairy sector and support the rural economy, the Chief Minister also launched a Rs five per litre milk subsidy scheme for dairy farmers. The initiative, announced at a programme in Guwahati, is expected to benefit over 20,000 dairy farmers across the state.
