The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), has given its nod to Unit-I of the Kudankulam nuclear power project at Kudankulam in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.
Unit-I of the project, with 1,000 MW capacity, received approval after the plant complied with all the directives of the Supreme Court. In its May 6, 2013 order, the Supreme Court had imposed several conditions on safety. On 13 July 2013, the company attained its criticality for Unit-I of the project.
Tamil Nadu will get its share of 450 MW from Unit-I. The power produced will be transmitted to the grid if the reactor reaches half its capacity.
The Russian-made reactor, called Voda Voda Energo Reactor (VVER), uses the pressurized water technology.
The entire project, being developed by Nuclear Power Corporation of India in two units, is estimated to cost Rs 17,270 crore. Unit-II of the project is under execution.
