The BMC has received Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) approval for an 8.48-km tunnel which will carry tertiary-treated water from the Dharavi Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF) to the Bhandup Water Filtration Plant through the Ghatkopar unit.
With this clearance, work on the Rs 3,000-crore project can begin. The tunnel is part of a larger Rs 27,309-crore plan to upgrade seven sewage treatment plants, enabling Mumbai to treat 2,464 MLD of sewage, half of it to tertiary standards. The new tunnel will run 145–150 mtrs. underground, reaching 152 mtrs. at Ghatkopar, and will transport 416 MLD of treated water for further use.
An official noted, “With CRZ clearance now obtained, construction can proceed. Treated water could also be used to meet the city’s future potable water demand.” Mumbai currently treats 2,464 MLD of sewage even as 34 percent of its water is lost as non-revenue water.
