Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planned a park exclusively for birds. This bird park will come up on a nine acre plot, at Naigaon, in Central Mumbai. Previously, BMC had also planned for the nation’s first bird park at Powai.
The Naigaon plot has been handed over to the BMC by Bombay Dyeing after directives from the Bombay High Court in 2013.
The company had a textile mill there which had shut down. After which, the company redeveloped the plot and constructed high-rise residential buildings.
According to the state government's rule, if the mill land is redeveloped, the owner has to surrender one-third portion of the land each to MHADA (for public housing) and BMC for public amenities.
Under this provision, around 32,828 sq mtr (about nine acre) of land has been surrendered to the BMC, which has to use it for open spaces, recreation grounds or public amenities. The bird park will be coming up on this plot.
