On 1 January 2014, J Jayalalithaa, chief minister of Tamil Nadu, inaugurated a modern pulp manufacturing unit of Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Paper (TNPL) at Karur, through video conferencing.
The company has set up 300 tonne modern machinery to remove lead on old paper and convert it into pulp, with an investment of Rs 164 crore.
Meanwhile, the CM also inaugurated a captive power generation unit. The project, with 20 MW power capacity, has been set up at a cost of Rs 167 crore. After utilising the power produced for its needs, the company hopes to save five MW and sell it to Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB).
Along with this, a drinking water scheme, being developed as part of company's corporate social responsibility (CSR), has also been inaugurated by the chief minister.
