The Central Railway is working on a plan to ease congestion on the heavily trafficked Kalyan-Thane route, where nearly 1,000 trains pass daily.
A study is underway to add the seventh and eighth rail lines on this stretch, with the possibility of an underground section near Dombivli. This is part of a broader effort to improve train operations and reduce commuter difficulties. A third-party agency has been appointed to conduct a detailed survey, with results expected by mid-2026. Thane, Diva, and Kalyan stations are key transit hubs, handling over 1.2 million commuters daily.
The proposed lines will also support a major expansion of the LTT and Parel Terminals, helping to separate suburban and national rail traffic. As one official said, "There is space available in pockets on the Thane-Kalyan route to expand horizontally."
