The Union government has announced a Rs 820 crore investment to establish advanced quantum research facilities across India, including 100 quantum teaching labs in educational institutions.
Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), shared that the labs aim to train students in emerging quantum technologies under the National Quantum Mission (NQM). The initiative attracted over 500 proposals, with 100 institutions to be selected for the labs. Union Minister Jitendra Singh inaugurated the first of these labs at IIT Bombay, emphasizing that the initiative will enhance India’s position as a global leader in quantum technologies.
Minister Singh revealed plans for four advanced quantum fabrication and Central facilities, with labs also to be set up at IISc Bengaluru, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Delhi. These facilities will support research in quantum sensing, computing, and materials, helping India achieve technological independence. "The creation of such infrastructure is a decisive step toward technological independence," the Union Minister said.
