After two decades of development, the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Power Project began generating electricity on 03 December, 2025, with its first unit successfully synchronized to the national grid at 6:12 PM.
The 2,000 MW project, being implemented by NHPC, will have eight units of 250 MW each. The second unit started generating power the day after the first. Three more units are expected to be commissioned by the end of December, with the entire project scheduled for completion by March 2027. "It was a defining moment in India’s hydropower journey," said AN Mohammad, the project's consultant.
Once fully operational, the project is expected to provide 7.421 billion units of renewable energy annually, strengthening the country’s energy infrastructure and contributing significantly to India’s carbon neutrality goals. The commissioning of additional units will continue through 2026 and 2027, further supporting national energy needs.
