On 8 October 2013, Sonia Gandhi, Congress President, laid the foundation stone for the forged wheel plant in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh.

The project is being promoted by Indian Railways. Recently, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam (RINL), and Indian Railways, signed an agreement for development of the plant.

The project will come up at Lalganj, Raebareli, in two phases. In Phase-I, the company will produce one lakh forged wheels per annum, for locos and high speed trains, with an investment of Rs 1,100 crore.

The capacity will be doubled in Phase-II, for production of over two lakh wheels per annum. Rashtriya Ispat Nigam is expected to commission the project in 36 months from the date of placement of the order.

Meanwhile, Sonia Gandhi has also laid the foundation stone for the resource centre of the housing and urban poverty alleviation ministry, to be constructed by Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO).
