The foundation stone of a nuclear power plant to be set up in Gorakhpur village in Fatehabad district of Haryana will be laid in January 2013.
The plant was opposed by several ministers but the farmers gave their land for the nuclear power plant which will not only be safe but also environment-friendly. However plans are afoot as, a faction of farmers owing allegiance to Kisan Sangharsh Samiti, had called off their 2-year-old stir against setting up of the nuclear power plant but another faction of farmers is still agitating against the project.
Currently, the technical survey for the plant is underway. Of the 1,503 acre acquired for the project in the three villages of Gorakhpur, Badopal and Kajalheri, farmers have already accepted compensation for 1,366 acres. The rest are expected to follow soon.
In October 2009, the Central Government gave inprinciple approval to the 2,800-MWe nuclear power plant to be set up by NPCIL.
