Nearly eight years after initiating land acquisition, the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has commenced development of its seventh independent township — Aerotropolis, spanning 5,500 acres as an extension of Aerocity.
The township will be executed in phases, starting with Blocks B, C, and D, as Block A remains embroiled in litigation due to the Rs 140 crore Guava Orchard Scam uncovered in May 2023. GMADA has floated Rs 457 crore worth of tenders for building internal roads, sewerage, stormwater drainage, and underground electrical infrastructure. A senior GMADA official confirmed that work will begin post-allotment and is expected to be completed within 18 months. The first development phase will cover 927 acres, down from the planned 1,653 acres.
Approved by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in June 2022, with further directives in June 2024, Aerotropolis will be located near Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport and offer 8,600 residential plots (100–2,000 sq. yards), commercial spaces, and be developed under the land pooling policy benefiting local landowners with developed plots.
