The government of India is planning to set up a new nuclear power project at Gorakhpur in Fatehabad district of Haryana.
The project entails an investment of Rs 20,600 crore and will have 1,400 MW capacity. The Department of Atomic Energy has already planned to accord financial and technical clearance to this project.
The project, to be known as the Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana Units-1&2 (GHAVP-1&2), will be implemented by the Nuclear Power Corp of India. The company will use indigenous pressurised heavy water reactor (PHWR) technology.
Unit-I of the project, with 700 MW capacity, is expected to be commissioned in 63 months, while Unit-II of the project with 700 MW capacity, is expected to be commissioned in 69 months from commencement of concreting work.
After commissioning of this project, along with 2,800 MW under construction at Kakrapar in Gujarat and Rawatbhata in Rajasthan, India's nuclear power capacity will go upto 8,660 MW.
