HD Hyundai, one of the world’s largest shipbuilders, has selected Thoothukudi for a proposed mega shipyard.
The decision underscores Tamil Nadu’s strengths in policy clarity, coastal infrastructure and execution speed, and aligns with the state’s goal to become a hub for high-value maritime manufacturing. The agreement was signed in the presence of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Industries Minister TRB Rajaa, and HD Hyundai executives. Thoothukudi’s deep-water port, favourable climate and existing industrial base make it an ideal location, supported by ongoing investments in port and logistics infrastructure. With this, South Tamil Nadu is poised to become a key player in India’s shipbuilding ambitions.
From HD Hyundai’s perspective, the India project is part of a broader global strategy. Hannae Choi, Senior Vice President of global shipbuilding at HD Hyundai, said the project marks “the beginning of a shared dream” for the shipbuilding industries of India and Korea, noting India’s energy, talent and limitless potential. The move strengthens Tamil Nadu’s industrial profile while contributing to India’s domestic shipbuilding capacity and reducing import dependence.
