Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) has decided to procure 60 new Metro train coaches and has already approached the government for necessary clearances, without waiting for approvals for Phase-II.
As soon as the government grants permission, a tender for the six-coach train sets will be floated, as confirmed by HMR Managing Director Sarfaraz Ahmad. In parallel, the government-owned special purpose vehicle is working on taking over Phase-I operations, covering 69.2 km, from L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad (L&TMRH) by the end of the financial year. After appointing IDBI Capital as the financial consultant to review the finance and accounting aspects of Phase-I operations, HMR is preparing to finalize a technical consultant. The shortlist includes three public sector firms and three private firms, including DB and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).
The government is also addressing issues such as common ticketing, first and last-mile connectivity, and maintenance of street furniture below metro stations. Discussions with financial and technical consultants are ongoing, with a focus on restructuring existing loans and potentially restructuring HMR along the lines of DMRC.
