The Phase I of the Indian Railways' DMU (diesel multiple unit) factory at Haldia in West Bengal is likely to be commissioned in November 2012.
The project is to be spread over 42.5 acre adjacent to the present Haldia railway station. Work on the Phase I had commenced in August 2011. The project is being implemented by Rail Vikas Nigam. The first phase is estimated to cost over Rs 110 crore. It will have a capacity to produce one rake consisting of eight coaches every month under the first phase while post completion of the Phase II, the factory will make a total of 50 rakes per annum. The Phase II estimated to cost Rs 179 crore, is to be implemented through the PPP mode.
