The Agriculture Department, in association with the Department of Education in Kerala, is planning to install a biogas plant in government and aided schools across the state.
Initially, the project will be implemented at a cost of Rs eight crore. It intends to provide effective biowaste management, and cooking gas for preparing mid-day meals in schools. The Department has already commenced the tender process for the proposed project which is expected to be launched by February 2014.
The Agriculture Department has vegetable gardens in 2,500 schools across the state. The Department expects waste from cultivation and food to be effectively processed through the biogas plants.
