Corporators in the civic standing committee have given the go-ahead for the proposed light rail transport (LRT) project from Shivajinagar to Hinjewadi in Pune, Maharashtra.
The project is being proposed by Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). The Corporators have also sought financial help from Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) for the project.
The detailed project report for the 21.6 km rail project has already been prepared by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The civic administration referred it to the metro cell for a feasibility study.
The feasibility report has proposed 20 elevated stations and three at road level on the 21.6 km route for the train that will run at 80 km per hour between Shivajinagar and Hinjewadi. The project will require an estimated investment of Rs 5,769 crore.
Of the proposed 21.6 km stretch, only six km is in the PMC jurisdiction, while the rest is in Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and MIDC areas. It is unlikely for PMC to take an independent decision on the project.
