The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has proposed commercial exploitation of railway land for three stations on Central Railway (CR).
The Maharashtra government has formed two panels to study the needs and prospects of commercial exploitation of Central railway stations at Bhandup, Mulund and Thane.
These stations will be developed as complexes, for which MRVC has signed an MoU with Railway Land Development Authority for the project. PricewaterhouseCoopers has been appointed as the consultant.
In order to generate funds for railway infrastructure in the city, the proposal by MRVC states that about a third of the funds generated through commercial exploitation will be used to improve suburban railway facilities, while the remaining share will be allotted to Indian Railways for use within and outside the state.
The committee formed for Mumbai will study commercial exploitation of Bhandup and Mulund stations. Similarly, a five member panel will look at commercialisation of space at Thane station.
A six-member committee has already been formed by the state government to suggest ways to develop passenger-friendly infrastructure at Dadar, Kurla and Borivli railway stations.
