The Maharashtra government has drawn up an alternative plan for the airport in Navi Mumbai.
With land acquisition for Mumbai's second airport proving to be difficult in Navi Mumbai, the government had started looking for an alternative site. The new site may be located on an island, about 1.5 - 2 km from Panvel Creek.
A Dutch company, Netherlands Airport Consultants, has been given the task of carrying out a feasibility report for reclaiming land from the sea.
As per City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), the alternative location for the airport project is spread across 1,800 ha and lies one mtr under the sea. The Maharashtra government has received in-principal approval from the central government on this alternative location and is also waiting for approval from the environment ministry.
