Chennai Monorail Project (CMP) Phase-I received ‘in-principle approval last week from the Ministry of Urban Development.
This project is estimated to cost Rs 3,267 crore. The Monorail services will be provided between Poonamalle and Kathipara with a link from Porur to Vadapalani covering 20.68 km.
CMP will be implemented under design, build, finance operate and transfer (DBFOT) mode. The financing of the project will be from the state government, its agencies and partners under Public Private Partnership (PPP), with no financial aid from the Centre.
The government of Tamil Nadu and the Central Government will set up a joint oversight mechanism and the details will be incorporated in an MoU to be signed between the two.
Earlier, Mumbai Metro Line-1 and 2 projects and Hyderabad Metro were approved under PPP model.
