The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has commenced the process to complete the remaining 61 km stretch of Outer Ring Road. Once the stretch is finished, it will be a 119 km ring.
It is one of the biggest projects in Nagpur and is estimated to cost Rs 1,200 crore. After approval, the total projects to be executed by NHAI, Nagpur centre, will increase to nine, at a cost of Rs 2,332 crore.
NHAI has received permission to execute eight projects in and around the city at a cost of Rs 1,132 crore. The project is proposed to be completed on EPC basis. NHAI has constructed a 58 km stretch from Gwasi Manapur on Wardha Road to Kamptee-Jabalpur road. State public works department has constructed the two-lane stretch from Gwasi Manapur to Gondkhairi on Amravati Road. NHAI will four-lane the 21 km stretch under the proposed project. Then, the new stretch from Gondkhairi to Katol-Chhindwara road and Kamptee-Jabalpur road spanning 40 km will be constructed.
NHAI will construct five railway over bridges, 20 minor bridges, 15 underpasses and more, under the project. For grade separators and other work, NHAI will have to acquire 100 ha more of land on both sides of the road.
The road will be constructed on a 60 mtr wide stretch acquired by the state PWD from Gondkhairi to Bhilgaon-Sirpur before 2004.
With completion of the Outer Ring Road, the number of heavy vehicles on the Ring Road -- from Wadi via Dhaba, Mankapur, Nari to Automotive Square on Kamptee Road -- will reduce considerably.
