In a major step towards enhancing road safety, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has sanctioned a Rs 150-crore upgrade for the Lucknow-Kanpur highway.
The project aims to address five accident-prone zones—Nawabganj, Dahi Chowki, Tribhuvan Kheda, Asha Kheda, and Chamrauli, that have witnessed over 50 serious accidents in the past three years, according to a detailed NHAI safety survey. The infrastructure plan includes the construction of three new flyovers, each approx. 700 mtrs. long, at Nawabganj, Dahi Chowki, and Tribhuvan Kheda.
Additionally, two foot overbridges, around 25 mtrs. in length, will be built at Asha Kheda and Chamrauli to provide safer crossing points for pedestrians. Colonel Sharad Singh, NHAI project director, said, “This is an example of data-driven road planning,” noting that accident records directly influenced the design.
Construction is expected to commence in November 2025, after the completion of the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway. The project is part of a broader integrated transport strategy aimed at reducing congestion and cutting travel time between the two cities from three hours to around two
